My teacher in school (long long ago.. ;-)) always told me that there are no silly questions, just silly answers.
I use this bitrate calculator:

Just if someone is interested, i did some encodes this weekend. As i like (B)SVCDs, I do a lot of 1 BVCD encodes as long as the bitrate does not go below 950 Kbit. For that I use Diko with CCE 2.70 and BVCD matrix. If I have to go for 2 SVCDs, I use Diko, CCE 2.70 and MPEG Standard matrix. For ultralow bitrate encodes (1000 Kbit) and below, I use Diko, QUenc 0.70 and QLB Matrix.

Great work Psycho!!!
Plz tell me, if I want to make a BDVD with 10 hours of duration, wich recommended matrix for me?
And this calc is correct?
Duration 2h ~ 8000kbps
Duration 4h ~ 4000kbps
Duration 8h ~ 2000kbps
Duration 10h ~ 1600kbps
If YES, maybe you can use some names of easy agreement to all, like: 4h DVD5, 8h DVD5, 20h DVD9, etc... and 1h CD, 1h30 CD, 2h CD, etc...
I'M REALLY INTERESTED :-D
Ps: Forgive my engilsh hehe

Great work Psycho!!!
Thanks XBrazucaX, I will impliment a wizard (a few check boxes) that will recommend matrices (using NathanX's suggestions) - this should help noobs
.
Or I'm thinking on integrating a bitrate calculator (based on the one at
www.videohelp.com/calc
) which will allow you to add a movie (or a few movies) and calculate the destination bitrate and suggest a matrix for DVD and (S)VCD, what do you think?
Regards your question, you have not included your audio bitrate, assuming one track at 128kbps:
www.videohelp.com/calc
gives you:
Duration 2h ~ 4952kbps
Duration 4h ~ 2410kbps
Duration 8h ~ 1139kbps
Duration 10h ~ 885kbps
The calculator that NathanX posted gives you:
Duration 2h ~ 4973kbps
Duration 4h ~ 2422kbps
Duration 8h ~ 1147kbps
Duration 10h ~ 892kbps
Personally I use the bitrate calculator at vcdhelp

@Psycho
Great suggestion as long as I can not held responsible for bad encodes due to the usage of the wrong matrix ;-)
Regarding the calculator: good idea, but be aware of the mux overhead. "My" calculator calculates the bitrate without mux overhead (that's why the calculated bitrate is a bit higher), I do not know
if the one at videohelp does that this way, too. Without integrating the mux overhead into bitrate a lot of oversized encodes could be the result... ;-)

@ NathanX
The calculator at vcdhelp does intergrate MPEG/Author overhead
, and I don't think anyone will hold you responsible - the recommended matrices can always be changed to incorporate any new/changed matrices and bitrates

Do you know how to calculate mux overhead? I always wanted to implement this in DIKO but never found any formula...

Maybe you coud try this:
http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-66145.html
or you could download vcdhelp.com's Bitrate-Calculator and analyse the jar-file ;-)

Updated
. Hope everyone likes the new features.
@ vmesquita
I did what NathanX suggested, analysed the jar file from the calculator at vcdhelp. I don't have my source to hand - I'll have a look and hopefully post a formula for DVD/SVCD mux overheads.

Here's how it's done in the vcdhelp calculator:
DVD MPEG/Author Overhead = (Media Size in MB) * (Number of Discs) - ((Media Size in MB) * (Number of Discs) / 1.021)
SVCD MPEG/Author Overhead = (Media Size in MB) * (Number of Discs) - ((Media Size in MB)* (Number of Discs) / 1.02)

@Psycho Reptile
Thanks for your efforts, but unfortunatelly that formula doesn't work well when you increase footage: Overhead for 2 hours of video is much bigger than overhead for 6 hours of video (targetting the same media, 1 DVD for instance). I've found out this in tests but never came out with an exact formula
